"Balling on a Budget" -Fan Strike

Pro athletes are overpaid.

Ask yourself - Should I be paying for other people to live in castles? ... To live on vast estates? ... Just because they throw balls through hoops well?

These 10 NBA Players say Yes! http://www.businessinsider.com/best-of-mtv-cribs-2011-8?op=1

Fans deserve to pay less for our entertainment. Bottom line, the excess of the top athletes is blatantly clear.

If Mike Miller lived in this house (pictured) because he cured a disease, we'd have no complaints.

But, we're talking about bouncing inflated rubber and throwing it in the air! And that last name was Miller, not Jordan...

Stay tuned - get ready!

Professional Athlete Salary Minimums

The NHL minimum salary is $525,000 for 2011-2012. (NHL.com)

The NHLPA shares 54%-57% of league-wide revenues, depending on total revenue. Can you imagine having access to over 50% of your company's revenue, as an employee? Wouldn't it be nice?!

The average NHL salary is reportedly $2,400,000.00 for 2011. (Source)

There are 30 NHL franchises, each with a 23 player roster at any given time. A total of 690 NHL players at any given time. (Does not include minors, etc. NHL uses 2-way contracts, etc.)

The MLB minimum salary was $414,000 for 2011. (MLB.com)

In 2010, the average salary of a Major League player was $3,014,572.00.

There are 32 MLB franchises, each with a 25 man active roster and a 40 man roster. There are 750 active MLB players at any given time. There are 1,280 players total if you include the entire 40-man roster.

The NBA minimum salary is $490,180 for 2011-2012. (NBA.com)

For a NBA player with 10 or more years of experience, the minimum salary is $1,399,507.

The NFL minimum salary is $340,000 for the 2011-2012 season. (NFL.com)

"NFL minimum salaries -- paid over 17 game checks (and not including any bonuses or incentives) -- range from roughly $340,000 per season to just less than $900,000 per season. Many players earn substantially more than $1 million per season in annual compensation.

"The average NFL salary exceeds $2 million per season; a player making $2 million per season would receive nearly $118,000 before taxes, per game check." (Source: Jason LaConfora, NFL Network, at above link).

There are 32 NFL franchises, each with a 53 man roster and an 8 man practice squad. That means there are 1,696 NFL players on the 53 man roster at any given time and 256 additional players on practice squads: grand total of 1,952.

There are several rules associated with the practice squad, read about them here.

Meanwhile, the AVERAGE citizen in the United States has an income of $27,041.00. (U.S. Census Bureau).

In this case, the average used is the mean - the total income divided by total number of citizens, or per capita income.

It would take the AVERAGE american, many years to earn the income of a Pro Athlete:
  • NHL 1-year minimum salary $525,000 of takes 19 years and 5 months to earn as an average American.
  • MLB 1-year minimum salary $414,000 of takes 15 years and 4 months to earn as an average American.
  • NBA 1-year minimum salary $490,180 of takes 18 years and 2 months to earn as an average American.
  • NFL 1-year minimum salary $340,000 of takes 12 years and 7 months to earn as an average American.
In total, the average 1-Year MINIMUM Salary for a Professional Athlete is $442,295.

It would take the AVERAGE U.S. Citizen 16 years and 5 months to earn that amount of income.

And WE are the ones funding this outrageous, out-of-control industry.

Show that the FANS SAY NO to outrageous Professional Sports Salaries.

The Fans' List of Demands

3 very reasonable demands:

1) Large Beers (24-32 oz) cost $5.00 or less at all pro sports games.

2) Large Sodas (24-32 oz) cost $2.50 or less at all pro sports games.

3) 25% of Tickets available must be priced $25.00 or less for all pro sports games.

The athletes are mainly millionaires. Some owners are multi-billionaires. They have gone on strike against each other in order to fight over their share of the enormous wealth. (See MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL).

Now is the time for the Fans to stand up for ourselves!

Let the owners and athletes know that we are the reason that they get rich... And most of us are broke!

At various times the players and/or owners have chosen to take their games away from us. Well, now we take our dollars away from their games - until some sanity is restored!

Our Doctors, Firefighters, Police, Military, Teachers, Clergy.... the list goes on and on - all do much more for the overall benefit of society. Yet, by giving our dollars away without protest, we only show complicity with the outrageous salaries and profits in the professional sports industries.

Join us in 2012 for the Fan Strike. Dates of actual demonstrations TBD.
